Poem 'Choices' by Nikki Giovanni - My interpretation

The poem 'Choices' by Nikki Giovanni is very beautifully written. The overall impact of the poem is that of reconciliation to whatever life offers. It seems there is only one choice and that is accepting one's fate. But at the end of the poem there is a note of defiance in the cry of a human being. This is the only way a man differs from an animal.
The poem presents a very poignant and reality of human lives. We too can identify ourselves with it. Each day, every moment, everytime we have to make a decision we are at crossroads because social constraints weigh heavy upon our minds. So I feel this poem is a cry of a 'imprisoned' human soul.

I first heard this poem only 3 days ago. It is the first time that I feel that I have come across somthing that has hit so close to how I feel. Life now is a little easier to accept. You see I would love to go back work but family is so important to me. I not only have 7 children of my own but, I also have 5 grandchildren. I have taken the choice in life to stay home and take care of my younger children and my grandchildren. So you see If I can't do what I want to do then my job is to not do what I don't want to do. That job would be to accept the fact that I will not let strangers raise my grandchildren nor my own younger children.(daycare centers)
I will just learn to accept the fact that this is what God had planned for me in life. I will just have a good cry at times and pick myself back up. I will then do my job and be satisfied.
