What if... - poem by Amritbir

WHAT IF...

What if I can’t cry
when heart is heavy,
I still can wipe a tear
with my laughing eyes.

What if I can’t fly
even if heart wishes to,
I still can soar high
with daring dreams.

What if words fail me
when it is most important,
I still can surely make
my silence expressive.

What if I can’t have
what I wish to,
I still can achieve
what I aspire to.

Sometimes...

Pic Src: Heat
Sometimes when the weather is nice
Sometimes when the clouds gather around the scorching sun
Sometimes the heat melts our bones
Sometimes we don't feel the heat even when it's so hot
Sometimes when the mind is clouded with a thought
It is then that we need a shade from the scorching sun
It is then that the shade is provided by care and affection
It is then that those two are missing
It is then that we miss those two the most....

(P.S. I don't think this can be taken to be a poem...but it is just that I penned my thoughts as it is.)

Review of my book 'Pages of Life'

Existential hues

PAGES OF LIFE
By Amritbir Kaur.
Chetna Parkashan.
Pages 71. Rs 100.

AMRITBIR Kaur is essentially a poetess of the concerns of life. In Pages of Life, she has hope and despair, daring dreams, half-written words, lies and truths, rancour in the heart and reasoning in the mind. She has tried "summing up life in a fake sentence!" The young poetess gives a faithful account of all that is strewn around in terms of pains and pleasure, issues and agitations, longings and apprehensions; and she gives a talisman, "beat the sorrows for joyful tomorrows". She not only puts posers but suggests remedies, too.
She has a unique capability to explore within—"search sans the use of eyes". But when it comes to seeking support for certain causes, she laments, "’coz a few hands don’t rise to pray and to protect". She has used beautiful expressions, like "I was alone when with you and lonely without you"; "but you turn deaf by the noise of the unsaid"; "My hands are full but not a speck carried"; and, "I wish I were rain, always advancing never stagnating".

Amritbir feels for the orphaned thus: "Sky is his roof and earth bed for the whole life till he is dead". She realises the pain of crime against children and recommends, "To check crime against a child and punishment not to be mild." Also, she laments the female foeticide brooding, "Where death comes with life!" In I’ll be, she only rues missing the "human part".
Despite her over-occupation with death and disease, old-age infirmities, loneliness and grieving, she still "chases a thousand dreams" and`A0is eager to search for her identity as the one "carrying a world inside", confessing at the same time and submitting—"I made`A0a mute appeal to vent the tongueless grief".
Her outpourings in the poem Reflections are like waters flowing down the dried streams, and she is beginning to sail along. "I relishingly recollect ... When dreams were stringed to toys/When nothing in the world was bad/When all I had around were joys/The times of innocent wisdom/And not of wise deprivation."
Amritbir has enough that is original in her, yet she tends to harp on borrowed diction and style of the classical poets. There is an abundant lyrical flow in her creations and she cares two hoots for strict and dire straits of rhythmical prescriptions and metres till the time she can make herself clear, and heard, too. She makes a point without caring being pointed out for being an "innocent sinner".
This young poetess doesn’t talk of fashion and fads; love, longing and live-ins; styles and stilettos; but, of things serious and sagacious enough to betray her age. She raises questions and answers them, too. The only obscurity in her is rectified when she contemplates, "I follow the traces in my mind ... Mindful of those I move on".
Pages of Life holds promise to "wake up in a greener world", for its creator believes that "the world is essentially good" despite the fact that here "Joy and pain swap places and destinations do a vanishing act!’ A refreshing read from a resplendent mind.

A Prayer (poem)

Pic src: Prayer

God give me the courage
to surge ahead
and not inch forward
towards the long lost dreams;
a chance to fulfill
my cherished dreams,
and wipe away the broken bits.
Reaffirm the faith in man,
of man’s goodness and goodwill.
Give me the wisdom to know
what is right,
and mettle to mend the wrong.
Let me not fall flat
on the mountains of hope,
let me see the light bright
at the end of the dark, dreary tunnel.
Give me the days when I am
unfazed by the obstacles,
unmoved by the setbacks,
and unscathed by the stones thrown.
Let me just move on...

The Music goes on... (a poem)

Life is beautiful
I say, lost in thought
my dreams vibrant
my paths green:
the flowers blooming
each day glowing.
Soon winds change
sea turns stormy;
and decaying flowers:
telling tales of lost spring
it was the last lesson I learnt
of truths hitherto untold.
Mysteries stood unraveled
the realities revealed…
Joy and pain swapped places
destination did a vanishing act,
Does life go on then? I ask.
May be when
tune turns awry
the music goes on…
But oh the difference!

Some words.... (a poem)

Turning the pages of life
I found some words
half-baked,
some half-erased
others half-written.
Of some tales
only the beginning...
of others the end missing.
Alas! Some words still unsaid
some lost in the deluge.
Some fell on deaf ears
some left hearts untouched
some hold my heart in place
some try breaking it
but words are there
some half-erased,
some half-written.

When I am not there... (a poem)

When the visage fades away
the words die down,
memories gather dust
and I waste away;
then, my dear
remember me...
Just a stray thought
in your heart’s lonely corner,
and loneliness will go away.
I would cherish that one corner
in your heart
for a while,
then to disappear
may be forever...

'The Wait' - a poem

Pic src: Waiting

I stood there watching
his footprints embedded,
I waited for the moments
that were never there.
Waiting for a spark
from the Heaven,
that was not to be.
The moving finger undid
whatever I etched on
my mind’s colourless canvas.
My eyes hovered there
for a while,
O that there was hope!
But that was not to be.

Women's Day

"We are cute daughters, sweet sisters, lovely lovers, darling wives, adorable mothers.
We are a source of strength. We are Women."
A very happy Women's Day to all the women around!

Pic Src: Girl Child

On Women's Day today, a news making it to the front page of the Ludhiana supplement of 'The Tribune' made my head hang in shame: Baby girl left to die in beehive
Shouldn't we all be ashamed for this? As a part of the society, we all are at fault. Each one of us is just as guilty. Society is not something that exists in absentia. We all make up this society but when it comes to blaming for the wrongs, we most casually blame it on society, as if that is some alien thing. Folks, it is high time, we tidied ourselves up and become civilized in the true sense of the term.
As a tribute to the girl child, I would like to share one of my poems, 'Female Foeticide':

A spark of life
about to die,
a cry that’s unheard –
and the unmindful
that looks on!
Mother’s womb is just
cradle turned into grave,
where death comes with life,
where lively lives are laid to rest.
A cry piercing the walls –
the walls of separation,
reaches out;
but oh! falls on deaf ears.
“Let me breathe, oh,
let me live!
They say like mother, like daughter;
O Mother!
Your own fleshes don’t slaughter.
Give me lungful of fresh air,
let me, O, let me enjoy
life’s little pleasure,
let me enjoy the high flight,
the flight of my dreams;
please don’t pity,
don’t pity my poor plight.
Give me wings to fly
the taste of success
even if want to try.
Mother, I am your part
please don’t set me apart.
Think of your childhood:
your mother’s lap
and your father’s pat
your brother’s care
and a family fair.
Don’t deprive me of
the joys of infancy,
exuberance of childhood,
the teenager’s fancy, and the
satisfaction of motherhood.”
The very word ‘motherhood’
rings a bell,
she thinks of her mother –
her poor helpless mother
her piercing pain,
the heart-rending torture.
And she forgets all,
her own self;
the pain vanishes
the flowers dry away
her dreams lose colour
the shadows don’t haunt her
on her face spread palour.
Mother’s face fills her sight
tears lurking in mother’s eyes
while pain stood staring at her.

'Without You' - a poem

Pic src : Lonely

I was alone when with you
And lonely without you,
No matter how I comfort myself
I’ll be incomplete without you.

This world where I live
Is so scarry without you,
I can’t smile to my self
And say “I am ok without you.”

My heart humbly asks “What happened?”
“Nothing” I say thinking of you,
The heart’s reply, “I’m shattered with your nothing!”
And I don’t know how to go on without you.

'A Search' - poem

Pic Src: Search

When there was darkness all around,

when the black sky did surround,

when every hope of light was drowned,

where were you all the time?

When nobody was there to lend a shoulder,

when tears too did smoulder,

when no one was to be the candle-holder,

where were you all the time?

When by words was the heart broken,

when nobody else could offer a love token,

when all made me lonely and forsaken,

where were you all the time?

Probably You were within me,

guiding and protecting me:

through the tough times You carried me

that no one else could have done for me.

I still believe

I fall upon the thorns of life
belittled, I bleed,
but life has roses somewhere
I still believe.

No matter how dark and dreary
the tunnel of life seems
there’s light at the end
I still believe.

What if the roads don’t lead anywhere?
What if I see a dead end ahead?
Life’s a journey ongoing
I still believe.

Doesn’t matter if someone’s bad
doesn’t matter if he punches you hard,
the world is essentially good
I still believe.

'Recollections' - a poem

pic src: PhotoSchool

I relishingly recollect
the much cherished moments,
those that have stayed back
those that never did backtrack;
when I only had skinned knees
when dreams were stringed to toys
when nothing in the world was bad
when all I had around were joys…
The time of innocent wisdom
and not of wise deprivation
nothing of the chains that bind
nothing of that long silence;
the time I heard myself prattle:
didn’t have to unravel my silence.
It’s that time I was reminded …
Something that’s not yet detached,
no matter how far away
a memory in mind that forever will stay.
Sitting, I travel far a mile
and I smile for a while…

'That Place' - a poem

There’s something amiss:
I don’t know where,
but the completeness is lacking…
The soul yearns, yet,
cannot be there;
that much coveted place –
a place I relinquished long ago.
And now is the nothingness
of being and existing.
If life could be relived,
if time rewinds itself,
if fate could be written afresh,
I would have achieved
of which now I am deprived.
Alas! the moving finger continues
to ink on new marks,
on the pages of my life.
And I strive and strife,
against fate:
O! to be myself,
just to be myself.

An Honest Confession

img src:Photobucket

Nobody says a word,
voices are hushed
my dreams subdued.
I made a mute appeal
to vent the tongueless grief;
and then…
the barriers broken,
silence speaks out
when the words refused:
it’s the heart that listens.
Dreams don’t die then,
they come back to me
with a rejuvenating strength.
Waters flow down the dried stream
and I begin to sail along…

Identity

pic src:I am?

Who am I?
I don’t know.
Nobody recognizes me!
An ordinary being
am I to look at,
but carry a world inside me.
With a façade of disguised feelings,
I chase a thousand desires:
may be a day’ll come
when my boat crosses the sea.
Waiting for the cherished dawn –
when I won’t be struggling at sea,
when I see the sought after shores,
when I glance around and find
I have arrived somewhere:
at a place where I can be myself,
just myself…

The Obscure Traces

 pic src: Deviant Art

 I follow the traces
in my mind:
some faces lingering there I find,
they have no names,
no voice, no visage;
forgiven but not forgotten
they hang on to haunt.
I try not to cast a glance
to come out of the momentary trance
but they continue to stay on:
as a faceless, nameless
obscure identity.
Mindful of those I move on,
swear not to turn back ever
yet being wary of their eerie existence.

'Fate' - a poem

Img. src. Wall Mirror

The mirror calls
it invites,
it watches me
tells me my identity.
But I visualize the ideal,
my search, my goal.
Attainable? May be not.
Waiting for the miracle,
for an angel to descend
to fulfill my daring dreams.
There’s the brooding silence,
the silence over fate.
Life looks on with tightly pursed lips.
Not a sound to be heard;
then mirror itself speaks
mutters something inaudible;
God drops a hint,
but no sound again.
Watching my path
I move on listlessly…

The Absence

Img. source: Deviant Art

My hands are full
but not a speck carried,
I have lost being the winner
I am an innocent sinner.
This world that I have –
it’s something so strange,
something so familiar yet
miles apart…
there’s nothing I can change,
nothing, nothing…

'At Crossroads' - a poem

At crossroads I stand
every day, each moment:
the eternal problem – ‘to be or not to be’
is there for one and all.
Accepting and rejecting
the track unbeaten;
wary of all, yet, being the fearless.
Path often visited
invites one and all;
the untrodden is taken
by those desiring lonely tops;
they often end up proud
being lonely in the crowd.
I stand and stare,
stare hard at the two,
refusing to choose one;
but still cannot leave the two.
Life freezes,
but time doesn’t;
then I am led,
and now am a part of it,
a successful loser,
a part of the mob,
a part of the oft trodden.
